The Fact
Bureau of Economic Analysis household-production estimates show that women averaged about 40 hours per week in household production in 1965. By 2010, women’s household-production time had fallen to about 26 hours per week.
What This Means
A large amount of women’s labor shifted away from unpaid household production over this period. Household production includes activities such as cooking, cleaning, childcare, shopping, gardening, odd jobs, and related travel.
