The Fact

BLS publishes two different monthly employment measures. The payroll survey estimates nonfarm payroll jobs; the household survey estimates employed people. They use different samples, definitions, and coverage, so they can move differently in the same month.

What This Means

“Jobs added” and “more people employed” are related ideas, but they are not the same statistic. Divergence between the two does not automatically mean one is fraudulent; they are measuring different things.
