The Fact

Not necessarily. BLS labor compensation includes wages, benefits, employer social-insurance contributions, and other payments. Unit labor costs compare labor compensation with output.

What This Means

A rise in labor cost is a rise in employer labor compensation per unit of output; it is not synonymous with a rise in workers’ take-home cash pay.
