The Fact

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that household production value added represented 30% of extended personal consumption expenditures in 2024. The same household production value added represented 16% of extended GDP.

What This Means

Unpaid household production remains a large part of what households actually consume. Looking only at standard market spending leaves out a substantial share of the services families produce for themselves.
