The Fact
CDC final 2024 data report that the suicide rate among males was nearly four times the rate among females. In 2023, the age-adjusted suicide rate was 22.7 deaths per 100,000 males versus 5.9 per 100,000 females, and males accounted for nearly 80% of suicide deaths.
What This Means
Men are not experiencing suicide as a small edge-case problem. The mortality gap is large enough to show that whatever is driving despair, isolation, substance use, health problems, economic strain, relationship loss, or other risk factors in men deserves to be treated as a major population-level problem, not a character flaw.
