The Fact

Human hairy skin contains specialized low-threshold C-tactile nerve fibers that respond strongly to slow, gentle, skin-temperature touch. These pathways are associated with affective, socially meaningful touch rather than precise location sensing.

What This Means

The nervous system processes comforting touch differently from fast, discriminative touch used mainly to identify where something contacted the skin. This provides a biological basis for why slow affectionate touch can have different emotional and autonomic effects from brief or mechanical contact.
