The Fact

No. BEA defines disposable personal income as personal income minus personal current taxes. Rent, mortgage payments, groceries, insurance, utilities, debt payments, and other household bills have not yet been subtracted.

What This Means

“Disposable” in this statistic does not mean spare money or fun money. It means after-tax income available for spending or saving.
