The Fact
At yearend 2023, 1,124,400 males were serving sentences longer than one year in state or federal prison. Males accounted for 93% of that sentenced prison population.
What This Means
Men are overwhelmingly represented in the most severe end of the criminal-justice pipeline. Whatever combination of behavior, exposure, opportunity, policing, sentencing, social conditions, education, trauma or other mechanisms produces that outcome, the scale itself is a men's-data fact that belongs in the picture.
