The Fact
GDP aggregates production for the economy; it does not by itself show how income or economic gains are distributed among households. BEA has separately developed distributional and “GDP and Beyond” work because GDP and GDP per capita were never designed as comprehensive indicators of household economic well-being.
What This Means
The economy can grow while different households experience very different outcomes. A rising aggregate does not tell you who received the gain.
