The Fact

The Bureau of Economic Analysis describes GDP as a measure of production and explicitly says it is not a measure of well-being. BEA notes that GDP does not account for factors such as poverty, crime, or literacy.

What This Means

“GDP went up” does not mean “ordinary people became better off” by definition. GDP can be an accurate production statistic while leaving the household-level question unanswered.
