The professor who studied food and exercise together, the way real life actually works.
Who is Paul Arciero?
Paul Arciero, PhD, is an exercise physiologist and longtime professor at Skidmore College. His training covers both exercise physiology and nutrition science, and his research looks at how diet and exercise together shape body composition, fitness and heart and metabolic health.
What he saw first
Most studies look at diet or exercise, one at a time. Arciero saw that people do not live that way. He studied them together.
He is best known for protein pacing, spreading protein evenly through the day instead of eating most of it at dinner, paired with a well-rounded exercise plan he calls PRISE: Resistance training, Interval exercise, Stretching and Endurance.
What the science shows now
In Arciero’s studies, people who combined protein pacing with PRISE training improved measures such as strength, fitness, body fat and lean muscle compared with the groups they were tested against. His work helped move the conversation from “eat less, run more” toward feeding and training the muscle you have, which matters more with every birthday.
WHY IT MATTERS TO YOU
After 40, holding on to muscle is one of the best things you can do for your metabolism, balance and independence. Arciero’s work gives you a simple starting point: spread your protein through the day, and mix strength, intervals, stretching and endurance into your week.
