The Fact

A 2006 study examined 170 members who contributed to DSM-IV and DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria. Ninety-five members — 56% — had one or more financial associations with pharmaceutical companies.

What This Means

Financial relationships between drug manufacturers and people involved in psychiatric diagnostic criteria were common in the population studied.
The most common categories were research funding (42% of all panel members), consulting (22%), and speakers bureaus (16%).
