BEA Defines Household Production as Unpaid Services Households Produce for Themselves

The Fact

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis measures 'household production': the unpaid work people do for their own households, such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, childcare, and home repair. Standard GDP leaves this work out because no money changes hands.

What This Means

Your home is not just where you spend money. It is also where valuable work gets done — work the economy's main scoreboard does not count.

Why It Matters

When that work is bought instead of done at home, GDP goes up even if no family is better off.
