Employers Cited AI for 101,743 Announced Job Cuts in the First Half of 2026
The Fact
Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported that employers cited artificial intelligence for 101,743 announced U.S. job cuts from January through June 2026 — about 23% of all announced cuts — and 173,568 since 2023. AI was the leading reason cited for four straight months.
What This Means
These count only cuts that companies announced and blamed on AI themselves. Jobs that are never refilled, or workers who quit, are not counted here.
Why It Matters
The real reach of AI on jobs is likely larger than any count that depends on companies saying so.
