The writer who asked what is happening to boys and men, and why it matters to all of us.
Who is Warren Farrell?
Warren Farrell, PhD, is an author and speaker who has written about men, women and family life for more than 50 years. Early in his career he was elected three times to the board of the National Organization for Women in New York City. His books pull together research, statistics and real family stories.
What he saw first
Farrell noticed that while the country was rightly paying attention to girls and women, boys and men were quietly falling behind in school, in health and in life expectancy, and few people were asking why.
In The Boy Crisis, written with John Gray, he laid out the problems boys face, from school to mental health, and the difference involved fathers and other caring adults can make.
What the science shows now
Today the numbers he warned about are hard to miss. Women now earn about 58 percent of bachelor’s degrees in the United States. Men die by suicide at about four times the rate of women, and American men live about five years less than women.
WHY IT MATTERS TO YOU
For parents and grandparents, Farrell’s work is a reminder to look closely at the boys in your life: how they are doing in school, who they talk to, and which adults show up for them. When one sex loses, everybody loses.
